Paris orders Russia to pay billion dollars to Ukraine
Russia must pay a billion dollars to a Ukrainian bank for lost investments in Crimea, the French newspaper Le Monde reports. The publication notes that a Paris court rejected Moscow's appeal and put an end to a long-running legal battle between Russia and Ukraine's Oschadbank.
The dispute stems from a procedure initiated in 2018 by Oschadbank in an international arbitration court in France, where the bank complained about the loss of investments in Crimea after the territory was annexed by Russia in March 2014.
- recalls the publication.
The author of the article explains that the Arbitration Court satisfied his demands, obliging Russia to pay more than a billion dollars. Moscow appealed this decision in the Paris Court of Appeal, but the appeal was rejected after many years of litigation.
Let us recall that Switzerland earlier obliged Gazprom to pay Ukraine over a billion dollars. The essence of this dispute between the Russian and Ukrainian operators was that Naftogaz stopped the transit of Russian fuel through the Sokhranovka point, which came under the control of the Russian Federation. In Kyiv, this fact was considered force majeure. In response, the Russian side refused to pay for the non-existent gas pumping.
European judges sided with Ukraine in this matter, making an openly politicized decision. At the same time, the Russian company has repeatedly stated that it does not intend to recognize such decisions and pay the claims of the Ukrainian side.
