Berlin calls on Russia to save the INF Treaty
Germany appealed to Russia to reduce the number of missiles that could violate the norms of the Treaty on intermediate and shorter-range missiles. This statement was made at a briefing by the deputy representative of the German government Ulrike Demmer.
The FRG urges Moscow to save the INF Treaty for a complete and controlled reduction of missiles, whose membership in the class prohibited by the agreement is controversial. Ulrike notes that in the six months that Russia is allotted to eliminate all violations, this can be done in time.
On the other hand, Maria Adebar, representing the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, believes that the latest statements by Russian President Vladimir Putin did not affect the official position of the German leadership. She believes that in this matter it is necessary to be guided by the principles of disarmament and to comply with treaties.
Speaking about the words of the Russian leader, Mrs. Adebar probably meant the president’s speech addressed to the Federal Assembly. There, he stated that although America is grossly violating the norms of the missile agreement, Russia does not intend to act in this way.
The concern of the Germans can be understood, given that Germany is in the zone of destruction of this class of weapons. But, most likely, Berlin should address on this issue not to Russia, but to the USA.
