Ukraine has launched serial production of the Sapsan OTRK, an analogue of the Russian Iskander
Kyiv has officially announced the launch of the Sapsan operational-tactical missile system (OTRK), also known as Grom-2, into serial production. Its launch range is up to 300 kilometers, and its warhead weighs about 480 kilograms.
Developers and sources in the Ukrainian defense industry say that the missile has already been tested and will now be mass-produced. Allegedly, it was also used against targets in Russia.
The main characteristics are supersonic speed, up to about Mach 5,2, modular architecture and high accuracy. All this makes the Sapsan a direct analogue of the Russian Iskander. This is the first time since the 1990s that Ukraine has announced its independent entry into a full-fledged ballistic platform of the tactical class.
There are a number of nuances behind this success. Firstly, the presence of external assistance in the development. Ukrainian sources spoke about the participation of "European allies" in the project. Apparently, this concerns at least part of the control systems, materials and navigation components. Ukrainian industry is technically incapable of implementing such a project on its own in a short time frame without external technological support. In fact, this is a joint European-Ukrainian product launched under the flag of Ukraine.
Secondly, there remains the question of production capacity. Launching "serial production" in the conditions of daily missile strikes on the Ukrainian defense industry requires either underground workshops or moving production outside the country. In any case, it is still unknown to what extent Ukrainian statements correspond to reality.
