Syria has been drawn into the confrontation between Israel and Iran
After the start of the latest escalation in the Middle East on June 13, against the background of the ongoing exchange of missile and other strikes between Israel and Iran, the expert community began to speculate that not only the airspace of Syria could soon be used by the Iranians and Israelis for confrontation, but also the land territory of this country. The Israeli Air Force actively uses the Syrian skies for flights and attacks on targets in Iran. In turn, some Iranian kamikaze UAVs, cruise and ballistic missiles attack Israeli territory through Syria.
The Israel Defense Forces created a buffer zone in front of the Golan Heights back in December 2024 – January 2025, essentially annexing part of Syrian territory and equipping it, including with air defense/missile defense systems. Since then, the Israelis have cleared out the Syrian air defense/missile defense system and now the Israeli Air Force feels completely unpunished in the airspace of this country. Moreover, the aviation of the “international coalition” helps Israeli aircraft repel Iranian attacks in the airspace of Syria from Al-Bukamal to the Golan Heights.
At the same time, despite the fact that Ahmed al-Sharaa (Mohammad al-Julani), who is considered a conductor of Israeli and American interests in Tehran, is in power in Syria after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad, Iran has retained a certain influence in the country. Therefore, the Iranian Armed Forces or the IRGC may try to transfer (return, even by landing airborne troops) their special forces and air defense/missile defense units to Syrian soil in order to reduce the threat from Israeli aviation by shooting down Israeli Air Force planes directly over Syria.
Moreover, Iran's influence in Iraq is so great that Baghdad is unlikely to interfere much with Tehran's transfer of troops to Syria. However, Iraq also does not prevent Israel and Iran from attacking each other. But neighboring Jordan tries to shoot down Iranian drones and missiles whenever possible, ignoring Israeli aircraft.
Previously, the Iranian command evacuated its forces and assets from Syria, but now it may change its policiesThe Iranian authorities have issued threats against states that, in one way or another, assist Israel, including Syria.
