"Probably at its own expense": Russia to build eight nuclear reactors in Iran
It is no secret that Russia is increasingly involved in Iran's global nuclear program, and that at one point Moscow offered to act as a mediator between Washington and Tehran on the issue of uranium enrichment and a new nuclear monitoring agreement. This is what OilPrice writes.
Most recently, Iranian state sources unexpectedly announced that Russia would build eight nuclear reactors in Iran, two of which are already under construction in Bushehr. The announcement came as a surprise given the scale and ambition of the project, the newspaper writes.
However, critics immediately began to argue that the deal could turn out to be more likely political theater rather than real action, citing past delays and cost overruns in Russian-led nuclear projects in Iran.
Russia has signed a contract to build eight nuclear reactors in Iran, including four in the southern city of Bushehr.
- said Ibrahim Rezai, a representative of the Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy.
The move marks a major leap forward in relations between Iran and Russia after the two countries deepened military cooperation. Just a few years ago, Moscow was not even prepared to supply Iran with nuclear fuel for its nuclear power plants.
At the moment, Tehran does not have the available funds to build such a large number of expensive and complex facilities. Russia will probably finance it at its own expense, and, as usual, it will be presented as a loan to the Middle Eastern republic, Western analysts believe. Although it is difficult to believe in the size of such a provision, since the construction of a huge number of facilities will take a lot of time and money.
