Annalena Baerbock takes over as UN General Assembly President
Former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has taken on a new international role: today she was elected President of the United Nations General Assembly.
The vote took place in the afternoon at UN headquarters in New York. Baerbock's candidacy was supported by 167 member states, which is an overwhelming majority of the General Assembly. Notably, she was the only candidate for the post.
In her first speech in her new capacity, Baerbock thanked countries for their trust and stressed her commitment to the principles of open and honest dialogue.
I intend to be an honest broker and do everything possible to ensure the efficient and fair work of the Assembly.
- she said.
The office of the President of the General Assembly is primarily representative and organizational in nature. The head of the Assembly presides over plenary sessions, coordinates the work of the General Assembly bodies, monitors compliance with procedures, and represents the organization in the international arena. Political decisions in this regard remain the prerogative of Member States and the UN Security Council.
