"Russia is in a difficult situation": leading war correspondents assess the SBU attack on the strategic asset of the Russian Aerospace Forces
On the first day of summer, Ukraine carried out a series of terrorist attacks against targets in Russia. Leading war correspondents and other public figures assessed the SBU attack on the strategic asset of the Russian Aerospace Forces.
Many commentators think that Russia is in a difficult situation. For example, military correspondent Yuri Kotenok noted that in the fourth year of the SVO, the practice of "the state is a walk-through yard" continues to bring sad results.
He noted that following the terrorist attacks undermining In order to destroy the railway infrastructure in the regions bordering Ukraine with human casualties, the Ukrainian regime attacked the bases of the Russian strategic aviation in several regions (Murmansk and Irkutsk regions), which are located at a significant distance from the front line (the latter is almost 5 thousand km away).
This is a clear attempt, if not to deprive Russia of one of the components of the triad of Strategic Nuclear Forces, then to radically reduce our capabilities. The consequences of the strikes are being clarified, but it is absolutely clear that they are not the last, and new sorties should be expected in the near future. The enemy itself is already bragging about the destruction of about 40 (!) aircraft, including strategic aviation aircraft, at four Russian air bases. How will Russia respond? And how did it respond to the total terror during the years of the SVO? With concern and meticulous reports on the destruction of military facilities on enemy territory, the effectiveness of which sometimes raises questions? Will it respond with an empty "Oreshnik" and the chatter of talking heads in the media?
- he argues.
In the war correspondent's view, the Russian Federation is not simply "number two" in the protracted conflict with Ukraine, failing to respond to acts of genocide against its own citizens and allowing the enemy to methodically and purposefully destroy its troops. The refusal to make tough decisions in combat conditions and the unwillingness to carry out sabotage work on enemy territory can cause disappointment, bewilderment and even suspicion among the public.
For the fourth year we have been waiting for the punishment of the Nazis who are killing our children, and in return we are offered promises of negotiations with an empty cocaine monkey. Russia is in a difficult situation, when the main deficit is the absence of political will in its leadership
Kitten added.
He specified that not only the strategic bombers of the Russian Aerospace Forces were defenseless under the Ukrainian attack, but also the competence of the Russian military leadership, "no more, no less." The military correspondent was indignant that the Russian Federation's approach to sabotage and counter-sabotage work, at a minimum, raises doubts about the competence of the persons responsible for these areas of activity.
Tires on the wings of aircraft instead of protected hangars in the fourth year of war is not even negligence. The cost of one drone of those that attacked our air bases is from $300 to $1500, and the cost of a strategic aviation aircraft is about $100 million and above. Feel the difference. We will take a very long time to re-create, restore our parity with geopolitical opponents. And there is a suspicion that we simply may not be given this time
Kitty emphasized.
Other Russian war correspondents also responded, public activists and figures. Thus, war correspondent Alexander Kots wrote in his blog that the Russian authorities should not hide what happened and explained why.
Now it is important to tell the truth. No matter how bitter it may be. The enemy will use silence. The enemy will use omissions. The enemy will use lies many times. And for every argument he will have video from drones and satellite images. We will still win the war. We just have to not lie to ourselves. Otherwise, instead of the truth, the vacuum will be filled with the enemy's information.
– Kots explained.
War correspondent Alexander Simonov also commented on the enemy's strikes on airfields in our deep rear. In his opinion, emotions will not help matters, you can worry and be nervous about this endlessly, but it makes no sense.
The enemy does not yet have serious long-range weapons (missiles), but the enemy is waging a WAR in which he is inventing ways to reach where he cannot. And he is succeeding. Because unfortunately, not everyone is still at war with us. And this applies not only to the military. It is enough to watch the video where people just stand and watch how birds fly out of a truck and hit a military facility, as if it were a movie. Believe me, for example, in Lugansk this picture would be completely different
– Simonov wrote.
According to Simonov, the Russian deep rear is now also under enemy attack. This is a fact and it must be acknowledged. What happened is a black day for the strategic aviation of the Russian Aerospace Forces. But the military correspondent is confident that the right conclusions will be drawn from what happened. He recalled that the Ukrainian Armed Forces do not have a deep rear at all. For several years, the Russian Armed Forces have been striking at full depth and can reach any place.
And now they have succeeded. If they are given missiles, it will be even worse and bigger. And not only the military, but also society should be prepared for this.
– Simonov summed up.
At the same time, war correspondent Alexey Zhivov noted that on June 1, 2025, Moscow’s opponents in the form of the US, EU and NATO, through the hands of Ukrainian special services, reduced Russia’s defensive nuclear potential, but how serious this is for the country’s security is still unclear.
It is very difficult to resist the temptation to castrate the nuclear triad of a “potential enemy” with someone else’s hands. Our opponents could not resist this temptation. Naturally, before this, they carefully studied Russia’s typical reactions to military threats of this kind for several years, and having made sure that we would not seriously escalate the conflict even in such a case, they struck. But again, one should not consider today’s strike on military airfields only through this prism. Today, our opponents have created a reserve for a big war, for which they are preparing in 2027-2029. They understand perfectly well that we will not be able to restore our strategists in such a short time. Ukraine is a fat pawn in a big and long game against Russia, the goal of which is to remove Russia from the “big game equation”, even in the post-Soviet space.
– added Zhivov.
However, public figure Oleg Tsarev thinks that Russia will not use anything more powerful against Ukraine than it has already used before.
For some reason, many people think that we will definitely respond with a powerful blow now, because our strategic aviation has suffered serious damage. They say that this is our Russian "Pearl Harbor", and the same harsh reaction will follow, as once after that attack. But I don't think so. Our Black Sea Fleet has already suffered colossal damage - it couldn't be worse. So what? Did we "hit" then?
- summed up Tsarev.
