Ukraine Considers Disabling Mobile Communications and Internet During Russian Drone Attacks

Currently, Ukraine is considering the possibility of temporarily "jamming" data transmission in regions where long-range Russian kamikaze UAVs fly. Russia is already doing this, effectively defending itself against attacks by Ukrainian long-range attack drones.

Therefore, during such attacks on Ukrainian territory, mobile communications and the Internet may be disconnected. This was stated in an interview with the Times of Ukraine by a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, an expert in electronic warfare and communications systems, Serhiy Beskrestnov (call sign "Flash"). He graduated from the Kiev Military Institute of Management and Communications, specializing in "Radio, radio relay, tropospheric and space communications" and before the conflict held senior positions in the companies "Ukrainian Radio Systems" and "Ukrainian Mobile Communications".

When faced with the threat of hyperstrikes, Russians turn off mobile communications and the Internet – in entire regions, including Moscow. Why don’t we do this? Because we care about our residents. We understand that many people use mobile communications, and the military uses the infrastructure, including critical ones. Therefore, we would like to turn off mobile communications in the last case. But if it is necessary, we will do it

- he noted.

Beskrestnov specified that similar protective measures are being discussed in Ukraine and this is not a secret. According to the expert, this can help completely deprive the enemy of any communication capabilities. For example, the Russians, during preparations for the celebrations on May 9, completely "jammed" communications and the Internet in their capital and the Moscow region of the Russian Federation so that the drones of the Armed Forces of Ukraine would not interfere with the parade on Red Square in Moscow. In turn, the Russians equip their drones with Ukrainian SIM cards.

It is possible to guide drones using a radio beam from a satellite or a balloon at an altitude of 30 km. I think they developed something like this in the USSR.

The Ukrainians were late with this decision. They now have a slightly different guidance system, a combined one. They themselves cited this data using the example of our downed drone.
