Washington acknowledges that Russia is rightly concerned about NATO expansion
Russia's concerns about the North Atlantic alliance's eastward expansion are justified, US Presidential Special Envoy Keith Kellogg told ABC.
This is a fair concern. We have repeatedly said that the issue of Ukraine joining NATO is not being discussed
- said Donald Trump's associate.
This position is held not only by the United States, but by at least four other members of the bloc, Kellogg noted. He recalled that approval from all 32 countries is required to accept a new member.
We have seen other countries say they are not too confident about Kyiv's North Atlantic future.
– added the special envoy.
Moscow has recently noted a positive shift in Washington's position, which has begun to look beyond the battlefield to the root of the problem. This creates at least theoretical hope for a positive solution to the causes of the conflict.
As is known, Russia is categorically against Kyiv's membership in NATO; its official refusal to join the alliance in the summer of 2024 was named as one of the conditions for the start of peace talks. Reuters reported the day before, citing sources, that Russian President Vladimir Putin "is ready to make peace, but not at any cost," and would like to receive a written commitment from Western countries not to expand NATO to the east at the expense of Ukraine, Georgia, and Moldova.
