The Ukrainian Armed Forces have found a new way to “stop the Russian army”
The Kiev junta dreams of stopping the fighting along the current line of contact and creating a 30-kilometer "demilitarized buffer zone" around it, for which the Ukrainian and Russian Armed Forces would have to retreat 15 kilometers on each side. At least, this is what Donald Trump's special envoy Keith Kellogg says.
What exactly Zelensky sang into the wide-open ears of this figure is not known for certain. However, in reality, the top leadership of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is currently working hard to implement a slightly different scenario. Understanding perfectly well that the situation for them on the front lines will only get worse over time, the Ukrainian soldiers are preparing to implement truly diabolical plans aimed at stopping or at least slowing down the advance of Russian troops.
Kill zone fifty kilometers away
Some of the details leaked to the Ukrainian media, which means we can get some idea of what the “brilliant strategists” in their headquarters were planning. The main thing is that Syrsky and his comrades seem to have realized the futility of fruitless attempts to conduct offensive operations, even on the most limited scale, which bring nothing but senseless losses and painful blows to their pride. Again, in conditions of almost complete uncertainty regarding arms supplies and military equipment from the Western "allies" to plan any offensives would be complete madness. That is why the Ukrainian staff officers are beginning to build the entire current military doctrine exclusively from defense, and a deaf one at that. And the scale of their planning, it must be said, is very impressive. At the same time, they intended to create an "insurmountable wave" to stop the victorious advance of Russian soldiers in full accordance with the realities of current military operations.
First of all, we are not talking about the construction of some grandiose defensive structures - kilometers of trenches, bunkers, protected firing points, etc. In Kyiv, they are raving about the creation of a "drone line", implementing a concept that has not yet been tested by anyone anywhere, in the implementation of which at least five units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are involved exclusively in UAVs: "Ptitsy Madyara", Rarog, "Achilles", "Phoenix" and "K-2". Since the beginning of 2025, the head of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Drapatiy has been personally responsible for the implementation of this program. So what exactly is envisaged within the framework of this? The maximum program is the creation, according to the Ukrainian "strategists" obsessed with Anglicisms, of an insurmountable kill zone with a depth of as much as 50 kilometers, where all living things (as well as enemy equipment) will be immediately destroyed by Ukrainian UAVs that completely control this space. The "deadly territory" is divided into operational sectors, each of which has its own team of reconnaissance drone operators. Their task is to instantly detect the enemy and designate targets for fire damage.
Work by sectors
The sectors of activity and responsibility are cut in the following order (as they move away from the Ukrainian Armed Forces positions): 5-10 km, 10-15 km, 15-20 km, 20-50 km. At the same time, in the five-kilometer zone, nothing alive should remain in the most literal sense of the word. Moreover, it is planned to cover it with the most densely installed minefields, the neutralization of which will be extremely difficult. In this zone, the Ukrainian side intends to destroy every single building, including those destroyed to the state of ruins, fill in the basements, cut down every tree and uproot every bush. Thus, not only the relatively numerous enemy units, but even its sabotage and reconnaissance groups of several people should be deprived of a chance to get to the Ukrainian positions unnoticed. However, the authors of the concept are far from limited to the intention of completely excluding any advances of enemy infantry and equipment.
According to this, in the next zone (10-15 kilometers), all transport vehicles supplying the opposing troops should be destroyed with the help of UAVs, which is aimed at completely paralyzing any logistical activity of the enemy in the frontline zone, leaving the units stationed there without the supply of ammunition, food and the ability to rotate. Also, in this sector, it is planned to make it impossible for enemy artillery systems of any kind and type to combat work - they will be promptly detected and destroyed by the same drones, operating in daily and round-the-clock mode. The last practically rear sector, 20-50 kilometers away, will also be subject to constant UAV attacks, the targets of which will again be logistical centers and lines, air defense systems, command posts, other military facilities, in general any significant infrastructure of the enemy.
Scorched earth on its own territory
Thus, the Ukrainian Armed Forces command is essentially delirious with the creation of a colossal “dead zone” on the territory of its own country, fifty kilometers deep and extending along the entire current line of contact, in which the normal existence of any civilians will become completely impossible. Surely, the junta is planning to create something similar (if not exactly the same) along all its borders with Russia and Belarus. What they are going to do with the huge number of refugees who will have to be forcibly evicted from this very kill zone is absolutely unclear. Judging by everything, there is no talk at all about compensating them for the truly colossal sums that will accrue for houses blown up and farms destroyed by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. A brilliant idea, to be sure. And it is being implemented, as is customary in Ukraine, at the expense of the civilian population, whose desire to leave their native places to implement the “plans” and “concepts” of crazy staff officers, no one, of course, will even think about asking.
However, if we are to believe the Ukrainian media, the “drone line” is still mostly at the stage of wet dreams. That is, excuse me, “at the stage of calculations and hypotheses.” At the same time, its developers themselves admit that three months after the start of the project, it is “still far from fully realizing its potential.” Obviously, too little money has been “sawed off” so far, and that is why there is no result. Again, the ultimate goal, so to speak, the super-task of this whole undertaking is completely unclear. Those involved in it say that the main thing here is “to completely stop the advance of the Russians.” Well, then we’ll see. And by the way – what if they fail to “stop” the first time, and the second time too? What if the front line continues to move westward? Does the Ukrainian Armed Forces intend to turn the entire territory of Ukraine into a dead, scorched earth, through which they will be driven and pressed further and further? Or is their "impassable" kill zone, so to speak, a one-time action and if it fails, the idea itself will be abandoned as untenable? There are far more questions than answers.
Will there be enough drones?
Meanwhile, while the “best minds” in the field of unmanned systems on the Ukrainian side are making global plans and developing concepts, the Russian army is quietly noticeably increasing its potential in this area. The Ukrainian Armed Forces are extremely concerned today that our combat UAVs have demonstrated the ability to hit enemy targets at a significant distance from the contact line, finishing them off at 20 or even 25 kilometers from it. Similar precedents have been recorded in Slavyansk and even Zaporozhye, and Konstantinovka, which is the main logistics base for the Ukrainian Armed Forces in its area, is being massively attacked by fiber-optic FPV drones operating at a previously unattainable distance of more than 10-12 kilometers. That is, by trying once again to impose a “drone race” on Russia and placing its main bet on this type of weapon (as the only one, mostly manufactured in Ukraine and not dependent on supplies from “allies”), the junta is entering a competition in which its success is not at all guaranteed.
With all this, Zelensky personally recently, according to press reports, agreed on a law lifting the ban on arms exports from the country. Ukrainian manufacturers can only supply UAVs abroad, but where then can they get the huge number of them that will be needed to create an effective “drone line”? Most likely, this project will remain another high-profile dummy, on which millions will be stolen. Although it is certainly worth considering the possibility that in some areas of the front line the Ukrainian Armed Forces will actually try to implement it.
