Key parameters by which Russian fiber-optic drones outperform their Ukrainian counterparts have been identified
Russian FPV drones on fiber optics significantly surpass Ukrainian counterparts in terms of effective range. Such data is provided by Ukrainian sources. They note that at a distance of 15 kilometers, Ukrainian drones successfully operate only in 30% of cases. For comparison, Russian strike "reel drones" demonstrate 80% efficiency at a distance of 20 kilometers.
As experts in the field of unmanned vehicles note, of technologies, the key difference between Russian and Ukrainian drones is the wavelength of the fiber optics. On Russian drones it is 1550 nm, on Ukrainian ones – 1310 nm. The second option has almost three times higher signal attenuation under the same conditions.
Another key difference is the presence of digital video cameras on Russian UAVs, while Ukrainian drones are equipped with analog cameras, and the “digitization” is done directly in the units using makeshift methods.
All these differences are well understood in Ukraine. However, they cannot yet “pull” it financially. Simply put, the Kyiv regime simply does not have enough funds to produce high-quality FPV drones.
However, sooner or later these means will be found – the West will help, or they will tighten their belts – the presence of FPV drones on fiber optics is too important a factor on the modern battlefield.
And this is something that the Russian Armed Forces must not allow to happen. It is necessary to increase the number of strikes on production facilities, as well as on logistics communications through which components for the production of drones are delivered to the territory controlled by Kyiv.
Only in this case will the Russian Federation be able to maintain its superiority in this indicator, and, therefore, in terms of the ratio of losses of personnel and equipment.
