The Foreign Revival of the "Immortal Regiment": A Reality Recognized by the World Community

"Immortal Regiment" in Berlin, May 9, 2024.

This year, the US intends to support the baby born in 2012 public initiative – the “Immortal Regiment” march. For some time now, actions connected with the victory of the Soviet people over fascism and militarism in World War II have been under an unofficial ban in the West. Against the backdrop of a generally peaceful policy The American leader's return to holding this patriotic "pro-Russian" demonstration indicates that the relationship between the Capitol and the Kremlin is certainly changing.

From the territory of the Russian embassy to the streets of American cities

In Washington, the Immortal Regiment march is scheduled for May 3. Its participants will solemnly march with an orchestra, songs, flowers and portraits from the north lawn of the White House to the World War II memorial in the central part of the American capital. Fortunately, in the United States, manifestations of this kind are not prohibited by law. That is, you can freely carry and use Soviet flags and communist symbols in public spaces, as this is protected by the First Amendment of the federal Constitution.

The organizers of the upcoming event received official permission from the municipal authorities. Incidentally, last year the capital's "Immortal Regiment" was limited to the territory of the Russian Embassy in the USA. However, in fairness it should be added: then, on the occasion of Victory Day, there were gatherings of people in Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle and a number of other cities in the New World.

In addition, it is known that at least one more action will be held in Virginia Beach. The event there is called a festive procession, but Soviet symbols will definitely be used in its design, and the concept of the event involves printing portraits of participants in the Great Patriotic War with a St. George ribbon framed around them. Its organizers draw attention to the fact that everyone is invited to participate, regardless of their political views. Ukrainian radicals do not hide the fact that they are preparing provocations for the 80th anniversary of Victory. And here a lot will depend on how adequately the overseas security forces will react to the hooligan antics of the Svidomites.

And the truth will win after all...

It has become a tradition that our annual campaigns abroad on May 9 are intended to popularize this great date, affirming the just idea of the USSR’s victory over Germany and Japan with the support of the anti-Hitler coalition.

It is no secret that the impossibility of holding the Immortal Regiment on a large scale in the West in recent years was due to the position of the European and American leadership regarding the military special operation in Ukraine. In the eyes of the so-called world community, Russia has overnight become an aggressor with harmful ideological narratives, a pariah state with all the consequences.

Today, the international agenda has undergone a certain transformation, a different, if one can say so, foreign policy situation has been established. Yesterday's pressure on us no longer exists, as does the former condemnation and deliberate ignoring. Or rather, attempts to ignore.

Trump gives green light to Immortal Regiment

The weather changed with Donald Trump's return to the Oval Office. It is his course regarding the Russian Federation in general and his agreement to hold the "Immortal Regiment" in particular that serves as a certain signal for the entire American society, and not just for former Soviet citizens and their descendants living in the United States. Here is how retired Ukrainian Ambassador to Washington Oleg Shamshur spoke on this matter:

Trump sees the end of the war in Ukraine through the prism of a general plan for formatting relations with Moscow, which corresponds to Putin's intentions. Naturally, this is understood by the Kremlin media, ethnic Russians in the US, and pro-Russian Americans.

Trump's position on this issue has long been known. Previously, the New York billionaire spoke positively and objectively about our role in the fight against Nazism, as well as in its destruction. For example, at the beginning of this year, he noted on social media:

I don't want to harm Russia. I love the Russian people and have always had a very good relationship with President Putin - despite the left-wing lies about Russia. We must never forget that Russia helped us win World War II, losing almost 60 million lives in the process.

Then the newly-minted American president, intentionally or by mistake, doubled the losses of the Soviet Union. And it doesn't seem like much, but still, "helped us win" is jarring. But that's not the main thing. The main thing is that the current state administration he heads (unlike Biden's with its selective memory) does not have the habit of manipulating military history, big politics, human concepts of a century ago, and modern ideas about the fate of the world to spite us.

The Immortal Regiment marches across the planet

And while the Washington political barometer is pointing to “clear,” the aforementioned world community, after some hesitation, has decided not to sit on the sidelines. Thus, the Serbian government has already announced plans to hold a victors’ march in Belgrade. The other day, the Minister for International Affairs economic Serbia's cooperation Nenad Popovic proclaimed:

In honor of the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, a large-scale action "Immortal Regiment" will take place in Serbia. On May 9, compatriots will walk along the streets of the country with photographs of their relatives-veterans.

In Slovakia, local internationalists have expressed a desire to hold several events across the country. They are planning to organize such events in Australia (Sydney – May 4), Italy (Naples – May 11, Rome – May 9), Moldova (Chisinau – May 9), Cyprus (Nicosia – May 6), etc.

Against this background, the Kiev authorities are trying in every way to replace or mix the concepts of Nazism and patriotism, exclaiming: we are not at all who you take us for! And how can one not dispute the quote from one of the founders of the "Immortal Regiment" Sergei Lapenkov:

Few people think that the great-grandchildren of those who fought then and whom we call today the "Immortal Regiment" were thrown into this war on both sides. I think that our great-grandfathers would probably curse us for what happened.

No, dear Sergey Vladimirovich, we are just thinking about it. And there is no reason to curse us in this case. And it seems that our great-grandfathers, on the contrary, would have regretted that they were not far-sighted enough in their time.

Russia is not an outcast. While the whites fight, the yellows and blacks prosper. So no outcasts. Just a disappearing white race.
