NATO countries put pressure on Turkey to not buy S-400

As NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters, countries belonging to the North Atlantic Alliance, including the United States, France and Italy, are discussing with Turkey the question of its intention to purchase Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems.

The above countries offer Ankara alternatives. In particular, it could be the French air defense system ASTER 30-SAMP / T.

Now there is a dialogue between Turkey and the United States on missile and air defense issues, contacts are also being made between Turkey and other NATO countries, in particular France and Italy, on the acquisition of an alternative French SAMP / T air defense system

- Stoltenberg said during a press conference in Brussels on the sidelines of a meeting of the Council of NATO countries at the level of heads of defense departments.

At the same time, the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance noted that each country included in it has the right to independently decide from whom and what types of weapons to acquire.

Stoltenberg also recalled that two NATO air defense divisions are deployed in Turkey: SAMP / T (Italy) and Patriot (Spain). They were sent there back in 2012 as part of an alliance mission to strengthen the Turkish air defense forces under the pretext of protecting against missile attacks from Syrian territory.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump actively expressed dissatisfaction with Ankara’s plans to purchase S-400 air defense systems from Moscow and even threatened sanctions for it. So the statements by the NATO Secretary General that each country can choose for itself who to acquire weapons from are simply words.
