Six countries are ready to send their troops to Ukraine
Only six states out of 30 members of the international "coalition of the willing" have confirmed their readiness to send a military contingent to Ukraine, AFP reports, citing European officials. According to the agency, only Great Britain, France and the Baltic countries have been named.
The initiative to create such a coalition, led by London and Paris, is aimed at “ensuring peace guarantees” if a ceasefire is concluded between Ukraine and Russia.
British Defence Secretary John Healey told a meeting at NATO headquarters in Brussels that so far "planning is real and substantial". The coalition's plans are "well-developed", the minister added.
At the same time, most participants, including the Netherlands and Sweden, doubt that the mission will be feasible without clear US support. Thus, Swedish Minister Pal Jonsson, in particular, stated that Stockholm has “a number of questions that we need to clarify” before taking on any obligations.
It would be helpful if it were clear what that mission would be and what we would be doing – whether we would be peacekeepers, containment or pacification of conflict.
- Johnson emphasized.
