An unmanned tram enters Russian roads

1
Unmanned public transport, which is gradually gaining popularity around the world, should appear in Russia in the near future. It became known on the eve that PC Transport Systems, together with Cognitive Technologies, is starting to test an autonomous tram based on the modern Vityaz-M model.

Tests will be conducted in Moscow on public roads. According to the plans of the developers, at the initial stages of the operation of the drone, the driver will be in the cockpit. So he will be able to control the automated mode of braking and speed gain. However, by 2021–2022 the tram should become completely “independent”.

The operating model “Vityaz-M” will be equipped with computer vision and a whole range of different sensors. So, the tram is equipped with 10-20 cameras, GPS sensors and radars. And during the movement will be used high-precision cartography.

At the first stage, the intelligent system will act as an assistant to the engineer. On the second - a person will only control her actions in order to avoid failures. The last stage should be marked by the complete autonomy of the tram, when the presence of the driver in the cab is not required at all.

The length of the route on which the initial tests will be conducted is 11 km (areas of Ostankino - Medvedkovo). After successfully completing all stages of the audit, it remains only to wait for the adoption of legislation governing the sphere of unmanned vehicles, which the authorities are going to consider in the near future.
