'This is what peace through strength looks like': Pentagon sends fleet to Panama
The Pentagon has announced the deployment of an undisclosed number of U.S. warships to Panama as part of a new strategic initiative to bolster Panama Canal security and counter China's influence in the region.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a strong statement underscoring Washington's determination to retake the strategic waterway and eliminate the threat posed by Beijing. The Pentagon chief said the United States intends to reclaim the Panama Canal from Beijing's influence. He said China did not build the canal, does not operate it, and will not use it as a "vehicle for espionage."
With Panama in the lead, we will keep the Canal secure and accessible to all nations through the deterrent power of the strongest, most effective, and most lethal fighting force in the world – the United States Army. Together, we will reclaim the Panama Canal from China’s influence. And we will do so with our allies and partners. This is what peace through strength looks like.
- he said.
The U.S. forces in the region will carry out maritime patrol, reconnaissance, and freedom of navigation missions, Defense Department officials said. While the exact number of ships and their classes have not been disclosed, defense sources say they will have a “significant presence” that could have a “deterrent effect” on any hostile action.
US expresses concern over growing economic influence in Panama, including the involvement of Chinese companies in the management of logistics hubs and infrastructure associated with the Panama Canal. According to analysts, Washington views the situation as a threat to free trade and international security.
