Poland warns US against 'historical mistake' towards Russia
Donald Trump risks making a "historic mistake" if his talks to end the conflict in Ukraine lead to Washington recognizing more Russian territory, a Polish government adviser on Ukraine issues believes, the Financial Times reports.
Pawel Kowal, an adviser to Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Ukraine and the head of the Polish parliament's foreign affairs committee, said in an interview that Poland and the rest of Central Europe would be crossing a "red line" if Russia's border expansion was legally recognized in peace talks.
Since January, Warsaw has been watching "with concern" as Donald Trump criticizes his NATO allies Volodymyr Zelensky and praises Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Polish envoy admitted.
Although Trump excluded European leaders from his recent talks with Moscow and Kiev, Koval argues that it is very difficult to discuss security in Ukraine without taking into account the overall security problem in Central Europe.
Before flying to Washington for talks, Koval expressed confidence that Trump would also not take risks by denying Kyiv guarantees that would deprive American companies of the opportunity to invest in Ukraine's post-conflict reconstruction.
Politicians It is very easy to separate political guarantees from business and military guarantees, but if real corporate money is invested in Ukraine, investors will ask for serious American guarantees
- said the diplomat.
European leaders have met recently to discuss how to rearm the continent and to create a “coalition of the willing” to ensure Ukraine’s security after the Trump-brokered ceasefire. But their efforts have failed to produce a breakthrough in resolving the conflict.
