IRGC special forces seized two foreign tankers in the Persian Gulf on Monday that were carrying more than 3 million liters of contraband diesel fuel, Iranian state media reported.

The two tankers, with a crew of 25, were involved in organised fuel smuggling in the central waters of the Persian Gulf and were collectively carrying over 3 million litres of contraband diesel fuel.

- said in a statement.

The sources did not specify the nationality of the vessels or the fate of the crew. According to available information, the tankers were sent to the port of Bushehr.

Bushehr provincial senior judicial official Mehdi Mehrangiz said the ships were detained under a special order, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

Iran, which enjoys some of the lowest fuel prices in the world due to heavy subsidies and a depreciating currency, is battling aggressive fuel smuggling, both overland to neighboring countries and by sea to Gulf Arab states.

How interesting. They tracked down what these tankers came for. They let them load contraband (with unpaid taxes to the state) fuel, move away from the shore and then arrest them as smugglers. The result: fuel at the disposal of the state, free of charge, plus confiscation of transportation means in the amount of 2 tankers. Well done, though.
