Facebook "leaked" 50 million users, losing billions of dollars

Another scandal surrounding the US presidential election in 2016 broke out in the civilized West. British and state media accused Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook of dumping data from 50 million users to a marketing firm that collaborated with Donald Trump’s campaign headquarters.

The US Congress and the British Parliament demand that Zuckerberg personally explain how this could happen. The authorities do not exclude that the data of citizens were used to create political advertising and manipulating voters.

Facebook has already received its first explanation. The company said that they were contacted by a professor at the University of Cambridge Alexander Kogan with a request to collect information about the users who downloaded the application Thisisyourdigitallife created by him. It offered to answer the questions of the test, which contained questions about personal data. For the answers, people received money.

The media claim that Kogan spent $ 800 on these “rewards,” and received it from Cambridge Analytica, a company established in 2013 that was engaged in marketing research and analysis of audience behavior.

The application automatically downloaded the location of users, and also provided information from user profiles indicating friends, likes made, and so on. One of the main customers was Trump's headquarters.

The application was used by about 270 thousand people. With their friends in mind, Kogan was given the data of 50 million network users.

American journalists found that Cambridge Analytica worked with the campaign headquarters of Donald Trump. This means that user data, according to The New York Times, could be used to manipulate the behavior of voters and to target the distribution of political advertising on a social network.

Facebook rules do not prohibit the collection of information about users if the owners of the applications give a guarantee that they will not pass it on to third parties. US authorities believe that Kogan violated these rules, essentially selling the data. And Facebook, in their opinion, is guilty of not taking sufficient measures to protect the service.

In the UK, their own "cockroaches." There is an investigation into Russian interference in a referendum on leaving the EU. And Facebook is also mentioned. Therefore, the explanations of Zuckerberg await in London.

Because of this scandal, Facebook has already lost more than $ 11 billion in a 6% decline in stock price, TASS reports.
