Resolutions of Russia and the United States “clashed” in the UN Security Council

Russia has prepared a version of a UN Security Council resolution on Venezuela. Meanwhile, the United States previously proposed its own project, which is directed against the sovereignty of the Latin American state and provides for gross interference in its internal affairs.

As reported by the agency TASS, the correspondent of which has copies of both documents, the Russian draft resolution proposes to resolve the situation in Venezuela by exclusively peaceful measures, through national dialogue, based on the results of the meeting in the capital of Uruguay, Montevideo. This meeting was held on February 8th. It was attended by representatives of Uruguay, Bolivia, Ecuador, Costa Rica and some European countries. The need for a peaceful solution was emphasized.

As for the project that Washington is proposing, Venezuela is rudely required to cancel the results of the presidential election in May 2018 and call new elections for the head of state under the supervision of international observers.

Official Caracas supports the draft UN Security Council resolution proposed by Russia. So far, however, no documents have been submitted - projects are currently being considered by experts. At the beginning of next week, expert consultations on this topic are expected.

In addition, the US side did not withdraw its draft statement by the UN Security Council chairman following a previous meeting held on January 26. Russia introduced several amendments to it that provoked a protest from the United States.

In particular, Russian diplomats pointed out that there is a threat to Venezuela, and this country itself does not pose any threat to peace and security. The discussion lasted five hours, but the parties did not agree, and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who appeared at the meeting, left the room in anger. After that, the legal president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, noted that this was his country's victory in the UN Security Council.
