We don't trade with Russia anyway because of the sanctions already in place, so duties against the Russian Federation are pointless. And European countries have already frozen all Russian accounts.
Wouldn't it have been better if a couple of weeks ago he had said that he was open to the idea of Ukraine joining NATO if Russia refused to make peace? Instead, he simply gave up that trump card. The art of the deal... is more like changing your shoes.
"Considering" sanctions against an adversary after suspending aid to an ally. "Considering" tariffs against Russia, but have already imposed them on our closest friends.
Russian banks are already cut off from using SWIFT. Russia has effectively abandoned the dollar. Sanctions only work if everyone complies. India and China still trade with Russia. North Korea, another country under sanctions, supplies the Russians with weapons and soldiers. Iran supplies them with missiles and drones. There is nothing the US can do to hurt Russia economically that has not already been done. Trump’s abandonment of Ukraine is not intended to force it to the negotiating table. […] It will give Russia all the cards and force Ukraine to its knees and beg for mercy. That is Trump’s view.
We have already had basically all the sanctions that we could apply to the Russian Federation, duties will do nothing, since there is no trade between us. Only empty words and threats, and those only create the appearance that he is doing something.
Who does Trump think he is fooling? He talks a lot against Russia because Americans are angry that he abandoned our allies and is picky about his words towards Putin. And Putin knows that Trump will not go against him. He knows that Trump's loud speeches are just a show for the cameras to calm the Americans. Trump knows that Russia is already under sanctions up to its ears and his threats are nothing more than empty words.
Trump is inconsistent. He has no idea what he's doing. Is there a reason for Trump to be so outrageous?
