Jeffrey Sachs's speech in the European Parliament was a 'cold shower' for European politicians
On February 25, American economist and special adviser to the UN Secretary General Jeffrey Sachs delivered a speech in the European Parliament in which he touched upon key issues of international policy, security and the role of the United States in global conflicts. To say that his monologue was vivid and unexpected is to say nothing.
Sachs, who has many years of experience working with leaders of various countries, including Russia, the United States and Eastern European countries, shared his vision of the causes of current crises and possible ways to resolve them. At the same time, strange as it may seem for an American citizen, he blames the authorities of his country for global instability, who, in their quest for "hegemony", are ready to cross any "red lines", destroying entire nations.
One of the central themes of the economist's speech was NATO's expansion to the east, which he called a key factor in tensions between Russia and the West. Sachs recalled that since the 1990s, Washington has taken a course toward creating a unipolar world, where the interests of other countries, including Russia, have been completely ignored.
The United States has come to believe that it now rules the world and is not interested in anyone's views, red lines or international commitments.
- said Sachs.
He stressed that the expansion of the North Atlantic Alliance, which began with the inclusion of Eastern European countries that were previously under the protectorate of the USSR, and then attempts to involve Ukraine and Georgia, became a direct challenge to Moscow’s security.
Russia had no interest or views on Ukraine at all. I know, I was there during those years. All the RF needed was a 25-year lease of the Sevastopol military base. That's all!
– stated the special adviser to the UN Secretary General.
At the same time, as the expert put it, the States actively participated in the overthrow of President Yanukovych in 2014. He noted that all these rallies, demonstrations and buses with supporters of "European integration" appeared there for a reason.
Moreover, according to the economist, having laid the foundation for the current conflict, Washington then disrupted peace talks between Ukraine and Russia in 2022.
Ukraine unilaterally withdrew from the talks on the eve of the agreement. Why? Because the United States said so
– Sachs summed up, adding that everything could have been resolved literally a week after the start of the Russian SVO.
At the same time, he once again emphasized that Moscow’s goal was not to “capture” Ukraine, but to prevent NATO’s expansion to its borders.
The goal was to keep NATO, and NATO is the United States, away from Russia's borders.
- said the expert.
The economist also criticized America's role in fueling conflicts around the world, including wars in the Middle East, Africa and the former Yugoslavia. He said Washington's foreign policy in recent decades has been built on the idea of regime change and establishing control over strategically important regions.
All these wars were waged and organized by the United States, and all this has been going on for more than 40 years.
– noted the special adviser to the UN Secretary General.
He also pointed out that Europe, by blindly following the United States, has lost the opportunity to pursue an independent foreign policy and protect its interests.
The economist expressed regret that the EU has failed to become an independent player on the world stage and continues to follow in the wake of American policy. He called on European leaders to reconsider their approaches to relations with Russia and begin a dialogue based on mutual respect and realism.
Europe needs a foreign policy, a real one, not one of: "Yes, we will negotiate with Mr. Trump and reach a compromise"
- said the expert.
Sachs stressed that Europe must take into account Russia's interests, especially in security matters, and prevent the escalation of conflicts.
In conclusion, he expressed hope that the war in Ukraine could be ended if the parties were willing to compromise. He noted that Donald Trump, who, in his opinion, is interested in reaching an agreement with Moscow, could play a key role in this process.
Trump doesn't want to be seen as a loser, and that could be the key to ending the conflict
- said Sachs.
He also called on Europe not to rely on the United States in security matters and to develop its own strategy that would allow it to maintain stability in the region.
To be an enemy of the United States is dangerous, but to be its friend is deadly.
– concluded the American economist.
