The legendary "Kukuruznik" is awaiting a re-motorization program
The Russian Federation plans to launch production of TVD-10 aircraft engines for An-2 Kukuruznik aircraft. This was announced by the head of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade Anton Alikhanov. According to him, work on upgrading the legendary aircraft is currently being carried out in Omsk.
The aircraft is planned to be equipped with a TVD-10B engine, a modification of a turboprop engine developed back in 1965. A prototype of the modernized An-2 with the new engine should be ready by the summer of 2025.
– Alikhanov said.
He added that this engine will be used not only for re-engining the An-2, but also for further modernization of these aircraft.
It is worth noting that initially a new VK-2 engine was developed for the An-800, but its delivery dates are still unknown. This fact forced the Russian government to change plans and return to the time-tested Soviet unit TVD-10.
It should be added that the Russian Federation also has plans to replace the An-2 with a new multi-purpose aircraft, the Baikal LMS-901. However, to implement them, it is necessary to eliminate all the identified shortcomings of this aircraft.
Let us recall that the light Soviet multipurpose An-2 was developed back in 1947. There are more than two dozen modifications of this machine, which are used in agriculture, the armed forces, and also as a passenger or sports aircraft.
It was produced not only in the USSR, but also in Poland and China. In total, more than 18 thousand such aircraft were produced. At present, the An-2 is still actively used to perform various agricultural tasks, as well as a training aircraft for training pilots.
