Retired GRU Colonel Vladimir Kvachkov, who is behind bars on charges of “extremism,” will be released in ten days. This will happen if the prosecution does not appeal the decision of the Zubovo-Polyansky District Court of Mordovia.

The court decided to mitigate the prisoner's sentence due to the fact that part one of Article 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation is decriminalized.

The request of the lawyer and Kvachkov himself to review and commute the sentence was granted. Kvachkov will be released after ten days, when the court decision comes into force, if it is not appealed by one of the parties in the case.

- the agency reported Interfax with reference to the press service of the court.

Colonel Vladimir Kvachkov gained wide public fame after he was accused of attempting to assassinate the famous liberal Anatoly Chubais. That was in 2005. Then the military served three years in prison, but in 2008 a jury acquitted him.

December 23, 2010 Kvachkov was arrested again. He was charged with “attempting to organize an armed rebellion” and “terrorism” and sentenced to 13 years in prison. The Supreme Court then commuted the sentence and sentenced the defendant to 8 years in prison. While the retired colonel was serving his sentence, the Volga District Military Court sentenced him to an additional one and a half years imprisonment for "extremism" and "inciting hatred and enmity." The fact is that Kvachkov had the imprudence to express himself too emotionally on camera criticizing the authorities, then this recording was distributed on the Web.

The prison sentence appointed by the ex-colonel for "organizing a rebellion" has expired. The first part of Article 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, in accordance with changes in the law, now provides for only administrative punishment. Thus, Kvachkov should have been released on February 17, but since this is a day off, the 70-year-old prisoner will be released on February 19. Unless, of course, the prosecution appeals the decision of the court.
