Trump needs China in the new DRMSD
A speech by Donald Trump addressing Congress showed the real reason for the US withdrawing from the short and medium-range missile treaty.
During the traditional annual appeal to Congress on the state of affairs in the country, the American leader accused Russia of violating the conditions of the DRMSD and admitted that in the future some analogue of this agreement could be signed, one of which could be China.
Actually, the mention of China as one of the parties to the new treaty points to the true reason that prompted the United States to declare withdrawal from the DRMSD.
At a time when Washington was bound by the treaty, Beijing, not being a party to the DRMSD, calmly developed, assembled and deployed medium and short-range missiles where it considered necessary. As a rule, in such a way that American forces in the region are covered with a reliable cap.
Neither at the time when the DRMSD was still being implemented, nor during the White House’s loud statements about withdrawing from it, China did not show the slightest interest in this treaty, and never declared its desire to become a party to it.
Therefore, it is hardly worth expecting that in the foreseeable future Beijing will suddenly be inspired by the desire to share Washington’s headache, and Washington, in turn, will find good arguments for Beijing to become a member of the new DRMSD.
