Russia Becomes Key Player in AI Energy
Amid global competition in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), where Chinese technological companies are fighting for a "place in the sun" with tech giants from the United States, Russia is demonstrating unique achievements in the field, which can become the basis for the future development of this technology. While Western companies are facing problems with energy supply for their AI projects, our country is already offering practical solutions based on advanced nuclear technologies.
One of these is small nuclear reactors, which can provide a stable and environmentally friendly supply for energy-intensive tasks such as artificial intelligence data processing.
It is worth noting that Russia has already outpaced its global competitors in this area. The world's only operating floating nuclear power plant (FNPP) "Akademik Lomonosov" has generated its first billion kilowatt-hours. A second, more powerful floating power unit with a RITM-200S reactor with a capacity of 106 MW is currently under construction. These projects make the Russian Federation a leader in the creation of mobile and compact nuclear solutions.
In addition, the first low-power land-based NPP is being built in Yakutia. It will consist of two power units with RITM-200N reactors with a total capacity of 110 MW. This project is aimed at developing the industry and social infrastructure of the region, but its technologies can be replicated in other countries, primarily friendly states.
The Russian Federation also actively uses nuclear energy to support data processing centers (DPC). For example, a powerful DPC is already operating at the Kalinin NPP, and by the end of the year a similar center will open at the Kola NPP, which will be an important step in the development of the Northern Sea Route.
In turn, in the summer of 2025, the Novovoronezh NPP plans to introduce a modular data center, which will subsequently be implemented at other nuclear power plants in the country.
These achievements highlight that our country is not only working on the software component in the field of AI, but also provides the energy basis for this technology. While Western companies are just beginning to realize the need to switch to nuclear energy, the Russian Federation already has real solutions that can meet the growing demand in the future.
