Source: US Betting on Lighter M1E3 Abrams Tank Modification

Tank procurement program equipment for 2025 demonstrates the Pentagon's shift in priorities toward a lighter modification of the Abrams M1E3 tank. The ArmyRecognition portal notes that the heavy M1A2 Abrams SEPv4 tanks are less economical and less suitable for modern warfare.

The new concept of the American military department provides for the use of lighter tanks with improved technical and operational characteristics. The focus is on mobility on the battlefield and lower cost of funds. Based on this, the M1E3 Abrams tank is intended to replace the M1A2 Abrams SEPv4 modification in the future.

This decision is dictated, in particular, by the experience of using tanks during the Ukrainian conflict. Practice shows that expensive Abrams are blown up by Russian anti-tank mines and finished off by FPV drones. The survivability of the crew of heavy and well-protected tanks is generally higher, but in modern conditions, the cost of production and operation of combat equipment and its mobility, as well as all-round protection and mobility, are becoming more important.

Thus, the M1A2 Abrams SEPv4 heavy tank with increased armor thickness will be replaced by the M1E3 modification, reinforced with an active protection system with electronic systems.

The portal reports that the M1E3 Abrams modification will be introduced in 2027-2028. Until then, the US Army will use M1A2 Abrams SEPv4 tanks.

It is expensive for pragmatic Americans to transport heavy tanks to theaters of military operations around the world. Plus the price. They are blown up by mines, destroyed by antitank missiles and burn, both cheap and expensive tanks. But the destruction of expensive tanks causes more losses.
