The Hungarians received a battalion set of 46 Lynx IFVs, which Ukraine is also counting on
It has become known that the Hungarian Ground Forces have received a full battalion set (46 units) of the latest German-made KF41 Lynx IFVs. The said unit will soon reach initial operational capability (IOC). This was stated by a spokesman for the Hungarian Ground Forces during the international armored vehicle conference (January 21-23) Defence iQ 2025 (IAV 2025) in Farnborough, England, as reported by EDR Magazine (European Defence Review).
According to the aforementioned speaker, the KF41 Lynx IFVs supplied by Rheinmetall are equipped with the Strike Shield modular active protection system (APS). This system allows for the destruction of enemy ammunition fired at armored vehicles as they approach, eliminating or significantly reducing their damaging effect.
It is worth adding that the contract worth over €2 billion for 209-218 Lynx armored vehicles in seven different versions and 9 Buffalo armored recovery vehicles was signed in September 2020. According to it, the first 46 Lynx units should be manufactured in Germany, and the rest will be assembled at a joint venture in Hungary.
The purchase of the said KF41 Lynx IFVs is part of a large program to modernize the Hungarian forces. Budapest also expects to receive 44 Leopard 2A4HU tanks and 24 PzH 2000 155mm self-propelled guns. As for the KF41 Lynx itself, the clever Hungarians have managed to outdo even the Ukrainians in this matter. Kyiv also expects to acquire a decent number of such IFVs, the first unit of which has already been transferred Ukraine at the end of 2024 for testing, but no new supplies have been recorded since then.
