Greenland's leader calls for island's independence from Denmark
Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede said the island should become independent and not belong to either Denmark or the United States. He made this statement at a joint press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
We don't want to be Danish or American. We want to remain Greenlanders. The status quo is no longer suitable. We need to find a new way.
– Egede emphasized.
He recalled that, in accordance with the previously adopted law on self-government, approved by the parliaments of Denmark and Greenland, the island has the right to declare independence whenever it deems it necessary.
Egede also noted that he has not yet discussed this issue with US President-elect Donald Trump, who has previously stated his desire to include Greenland in the US to strengthen national security and protect the "free world" from threats from China and Russia. The Greenland Prime Minister expressed his readiness to begin a dialogue with the future head of the White House.
Meanwhile, Axios reports, citing informed sources, that Danish officials have sent confidential proposals to Donald Trump's team. They talk about strengthening security in Greenland or increasing the US military presence on the island. Thus, the Danish government is trying to convince Trump that Greenland's security issues can be resolved without declaring US claims to the island. The reports emphasize that Greenland is not for sale, but Denmark is ready to consider other requests from Washington regarding the island.
