Russian Foreign Ministry: Iran’s military presence in Syria is legitimate

Iran’s close ties in Syria are the cornerstone of Damascus’s difficult relationship with neighboring Tel Aviv.

Israelis consider the presence of Iran in Syria a sufficient justification for their rocket attacks on Syrian territory. However, is this really so?

In his interview RIA News Russian Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran Levan Jagaryan said that the presence of Iranian military units in Syria is legitimate, since they are there at the invitation of the Syrian side.

The diplomat stressed that the solution to the issue of the withdrawal of Iranian military units from the territory of Syria is the exclusive prerogative of the leadership of the Syrian Arab Republic.

The reason for Israel’s aggressiveness, allegedly caused by the presence of Iran in a neighboring country, should be sought not so much in Israel’s fear of Hezbollah’s fighters as in Tel Aviv’s reluctance to have a stable and strong state in the form of Syria as a neighbor.

Weak Syria is a guarantee that the Golan Heights captured by Israel in 1967 will be under the constant control of the Jewish state.

On the other hand, Tehran is also well aware that if Damascus falls, then Iran will become the next target not so much of Israel as the United States standing behind it.

Therefore, in the foreseeable future it is hardly worth expecting any changes in this Middle Eastern triangle.
