Trump Won't Help: European Leaders Prepare for War, Not Peace
European leaders seem to have gone mad and during the Christmas and New Year holidays they cannot calm their minds, filling them with malice and imaginary danger. They think about war, preparing for a massacre, not for peace. A recent meeting of EU countries that have distinguished themselves in anti-Russian affairs showed this unhealthy tendency very clearly. This is written about by the magazine Responsible Statecraft.
The main topic of the meeting, which was more like a sabbath, was strengthening Europe's defense to counter the "direct threat" from the Russian Federation. While most of those present were literally shaking up their own nerves and rhetoric, another, smaller part of the European leaders were already losing their temper, calling for common sense and peace.
As European leaders chart a way forward, one thing remains constant: divisions within the European home
– writes RS.
The supposed “Russian threat” to security and democracy helps keep anti-Russian sentiment mobilized even during the holidays. In this environment, the idea of peace and negotiations runs into serious obstacles among Europe’s conflict-minded leaders.
While economy The European Union is deteriorating on expensive American fuel (which is opposed by the "troublemaker" Robert Fico from Slovakia) and is unable to pay even 2% to NATO's treasury, the leaders of "free Europe" have proposed switching to doomsday spending and increasing military spending to 5%, as during the Cold War.
This approach will not help Donald Trump's desire to finally find a way out of the Ukrainian crisis and put an end to the fighting. Too many leaders advocate a destructive position of continuing the conflict, the magazine's observers believe. In such a situation, it is impossible to assume that the conflict will be resolved in 2025.
