Russia is ready to extend gas transit through Ukraine
The hysteria of the Ukrainian authorities regarding the termination of the transit of Russian gas through the Ukrainian gas transportation system has no foundation.
The Permanent Representative of Russia to the EU, Vladimir Chizhov, said that Moscow considers the current contract for the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine to be optimal, which expires at the end of the current year, 2019.
Moreover, according to the representative, the Russian side, represented by Gazprom, is ready to extend the document for a sufficiently long period: we can talk about an agreement for the next ten years.
Vladimir Chizhov noted that the Russian side expressed the wish that the new contract with Ukraine comply with the EU gas legislation, however, most likely, it will not insist on this in view of the unpreparedness of Ukrainian legislation.
According to the Russian diplomat, the upcoming presidential elections in Ukraine could negatively affect the timing of signing a new gas contract.
It must be understood that for any outcome of the elections, Ukraine will need to transit Russian gas, as this is one of the most significant sources of filling its already meager budget. Therefore, in one variation or another, a new gas treaty between Russia and Ukraine will be signed.
