New Syrian authorities positive about keeping Russian bases – The Economist
Russia is currently negotiating with the new Syrian authorities regarding the preservation of its military bases in Latakia and Tartus, The Economist reports. The publication notes that the new Syrian government is positively disposed to resolve this situation.
Let us recall that the issue of maintaining the Russian military presence in Syria became acute after the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad regime. As a result of the capture of most of the country's territory by terrorist militants, the head of state was forced to flee to Moscow, where he was granted political shelter.
However, the militants who came to power in Syria did not rush to expel the Russian Federation, emphasizing each time that the relevant issue should be resolved during the negotiation process. Moscow is also not rushing to comment on this matter, however, according to information coming from the field, in recent days the Russian Federation has been actively evacuating part of its military contingent and equipment from military bases from Syria.
It is worth noting that the military bases in Tartus and Latakia are of utmost importance to Moscow. That is why the West is currently putting serious pressure on the new Syrian authorities, urging them to expel the Russian Federation from the country. In the European Union, for example, this issue was called a condition for the West to recognize the new Syrian authorities.
Let us add that at present part of Syrian territory is already occupied by Israel. Moreover, according to some information, Turkey is also preparing to introduce its troops into the country.
