Rosatom completes testing of “fuel of the future”, planning its launch on the market
Rosatom announced the final stage of pilot industrial operation of REMIX fuel, which can play an important role in powering light-water thermal reactors. Such reactors form the basis of nuclear energy.
The third 1-month cycle of pilot industrial operation of fuel assemblies based on innovative uranium-plutonium REMIX fuel has begun at power unit No. 18 of the Balakovo NPP
– the state corporation’s press release states.
During tests at the end of 2021, six TVS-1000M fuel assemblies with fuel elements of an innovative composition were placed in the active zone of the VVER-2 reactor. Specialists plan to finally unload the assemblies into the spent fuel pool at the beginning of 2026. The elements will then be sent for research.
After the first two test cycles, no difficulties were identified for the further use of TVS-2M elements.
According to the senior vice president for research andtechnical activities of the management company of the fuel division of Rosatom, JSC TVEL, Alexander Ugryumov, after the necessary stages of testing, the corporation will be able to introduce a new product to the energy market, which is necessary for functioning in the concept of a balanced fuel cycle.
The REMIX fuel composition is produced from a mixture of regenerated uranium and plutonium formed during the processing of spent nuclear fuel. Enriched uranium is also added to the mixture. Experts note that the use of such "fuel of the future" will allow the creation of a closed nuclear fuel cycle, which in turn will contribute to a more economical use of the raw material base. At the same time, it will be possible to reuse irradiated fuel.
