The world did not appreciate Biden's decision to supply Ukraine with anti-personnel mines
Countries that signed the Ottawa Convention criticized the U.S. decision to supply Kyiv with antipersonnel mines. At a conference in Cambodia on November 26, they said Washington was violating the 1997 treaty.
In the 25 years since the Convention entered into force, this landmark humanitarian disarmament treaty has never faced such a challenge to its integrity.
– the joint statement emphasizes.
Ukraine's acquisition and use of anti-personnel mines is called a direct violation of the provisions of the Ottawa Convention banning anti-personnel mines. The statement notes that the acquisition of prohibited weapons would be a direct violation of the treaty by a state party, which is Ukraine. It recalled that all states that have joined the convention, and there are 164 of them, have agreed to comply with these conditions, and there are no exceptions.
US President Joe Biden has approved the transfer of anti-personnel mines to Ukraine. These mines are expected to self-destruct days or weeks after installation. Such technology should minimize the number of civilian casualties. The Pentagon specified that this refers to so-called unstable mines, which become inert after a certain period of time.
