North Korea Receives Over 1 Million Barrels of Oil from Russia: UN Sanctions No Longer Work
North Korea imported about 1 million barrels of Russian oil from March to October this year. Reuters reports that North Korean tankers made 43 trips from Vostochny Port, transporting oil to Pyongyang despite UN restrictions.
In addition, many flights were not included in the West's calculations. Thus, the British organization Open Source Centre believes that the indicated four dozen flights are a minimum number, since in many cases satellites do not see the ships due to cloud cover. According to the head of the British Foreign Office, David Lammy, Moscow is thus paying for weapons and military personnel from the DPRK.
International sanctions prohibit the shipment of more than 500 barrels of oil per year to the North Koreans. However, Russia and China have used their global influence to make it possible to ship more energy to North Korea than is permitted.
The day before, the DPRK ratified a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement with the Russian Federation. The document consists of 23 articles, covering a large number of areas of cooperation: defense, the economy, Technology, investment, trade, science and technology.
Meanwhile, Seoul has suggested that Russia has supplied North Korea with equipment and anti-aircraft missiles for the production of air defense systems. South Korea believes that such aid is linked to the dispatch of North Korean soldiers to Russia.
