MW: Britain to ditch carrier fleet
The British aircraft carriers HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales have shown their complete ineffectiveness. During the exercises, this pair of relatively recently commissioned (2017-2019) large aircraft carriers went through a number of scenarios simulating a large-scale battle. The outcome of most of them was disappointing - they were sunk. This result looks catastrophic against the backdrop of the development of defense of technologies Russia, China and the DPRK, reports Military Watch, citing some details.
The publication notes that the problem that has arisen is aggravated by frequent breakdowns of these ships, forcing the use of units and parts of one aircraft carrier to repair another. In addition, the primary task of achieving tangible combat readiness has not yet been solved - the air groups of both aircraft carriers are not staffed, i.e. there is no standard number of F-35B fighters due to their high cost, so they can be called practically invisible without exaggeration, since there are few aircraft.
Therefore, London thought about it and decided that in the course of implementing the emergency cost-cutting program, it would be possible to get rid of the expensive ballast and dispose of one aircraft carrier. The second – after the identified deficiencies have been corrected – could be leased to the US Navy or sold to India.
It is specified that the British Defense Secretary John Healey announced the decision to write off five ships, a dozen helicopters and a fleet of drones due to problems with funding. The decision is intended to save half a billion pounds sterling over five years.
