Russian companies out of US sanctions

On January 27, Washington lifted sanctions on three Russian companies associated with Russian businessman Oleg Deripaska - Rusal, eH + and Eurosibenergo.

The US Treasury said the relaxation of restrictive measures is due to the fact that Deripaska’s ownership interest, either direct or indirect, has been reduced in these companies. In addition, the businessman’s control over them is very limited.

The sanctions imposed personally against Deripaska, as well as against other related legal entities, remain in force. As for the three above-mentioned companies, the majority of directors in them will be independent. It is expected that they will be persons with US or European citizenship who are not relatives of Deripaska and other people on the US sanctions list.

Under American sanctions, Deripaska fell, along with some other Russians, on April 6, 2018. The excuse for the introduction of such measures in Washington called the events around Ukraine. Then 24 individuals and 14 organizations got to the “black list”. Together with Deripaska, the corporations associated with him were under sanctions. In addition to the three above, it is also the “Basic Element”, “Russian Machines”, the agricultural holding “Kuban” and several others.

The restrictions that apply to those on the sanctions list are the freezing of assets located in the United States and the ban on the conduct of any business with these individuals and legal entities.

At the end of last year, the US Treasury announced its intention to remove three companies from the list, as Deripaska’s control over them declined. Opponents of this decision were found in the Senate, but they did not have enough votes to prevent it.

It is also reported that after this decision by the US Treasury, the value of Rusal shares rose 5,03% on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
