NATO appreciated the capabilities of the Russian fleet
The state of the armed forces and navy of Russia will always be the object of close attention from the North Atlantic Alliance and the United States.
In January 2019, the NATO Defense College published a report that included naval analysis policy Russia and the state of its fleet.
In particular, the report notes that the stake made by the country's leadership on the missile armament of the fleet, and not on the construction of large vessels, allows Russia to retain the title of the second most powerful naval power.
According to experts familiar with the report, recognition of the capabilities of the Russian Navy as a whole is a positive signal, as it will cool many "hot heads" from hasty and ill-conceived decisions.
Experts note that the authors of the report are intentionally trying to present Moscow’s strategy as offensive and aggressive, although it is obvious that the main functionality of the Russian Navy is the protection of maritime borders.
Also, experts drew attention to the fact that in Russia they do not share the strategic thinking of the NATO countries, which implies the development of both a “high sea fleet” and a “near sea fleet”, but proceed from their real capabilities and needs.
In its report, the NATO Defense College concludes that the tasks assigned to the Russian Navy in a program document approved by Vladimir Putin - "The Basics of State Policy in the Field of Naval Activities for the Period until 2030" will be fulfilled.
