Poll: how many Russians are ready to give the Kuril Islands to Japan?

0
A survey of Russian citizens conducted by the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM) showed that 77% of respondents strongly opposed the transfer of the South Kuril Islands to Japan. It is noteworthy that only 79% of respondents know about this problem, while 14% of respondents spoke in favor of transferring the islands of Japan.

Almost a third of respondents (29%) believe that the issue has already been resolved and a review of the results of World War II is unacceptable. And ten percent believe that it is impossible to return territories that were liberated at the cost of the lives of Russian and Soviet citizens.

At the same time, it is noted that the number of Russians who are inclined to continue the dialogue with Japan is growing. If in 2009 there were 35%, then in 2018 the number of rationally-minded citizens increased to 51%.

Valery Fedorov, VTsIOM General Director, notes that one of the main motives of Russian citizens is the fear of a possible revision of the outcome of World War II.

Therefore, our main public demand for Russian-Japanese negotiations is not the immediate achievement of any result, but an effective result from the point of view of our interests.

Recall that earlier Yuri Ushakov, the assistant to the president of Russia, said that the key condition for concluding a peace treaty with Japan is her recognition of the results of World War II and Russian sovereignty over the Kuril Islands.
