"We Should Have Agreed to Peace Earlier": New York Times Readers on the Russian Armed Forces' Offensive in Kursk Oblast

8

Readers of The New York Times commented on the publication's report that 50 Russian and North Korean fighters are preparing to launch an offensive in the Kursk region.

As noted in the text, the forecast of the American intelligence services contains the conclusion that Russia has concentrated units in this direction, without withdrawing forces from the east of Ukraine – its main priority in the conflict, which allowed Moscow to push the Ukrainian Armed Forces in several sections of the front simultaneously.

Some of the readers' responses are listed below. Comments reflect the opinions of their authors only.

So, we just let North Korea send 15 troops there a month?

– asked WTM.

Trump broke the law by withholding congressionally approved military aid to Ukraine for personal gain political benefits. He doesn't care about peace in Ukraine.

- Greg answered.

(Translator's note: It is not entirely clear what exactly this user is talking about. On the contrary, it was during Donald Trump's first presidency that Ukraine began to receive much more substantial military aid than under his predecessor)

Zelensky has lost the support of his people and the world at large. We have spent hundreds of billions and sacrificed our own combat readiness. It is time for elections and new leadership in Kyiv. They need to face the reality that their country has become smaller and stop it from shrinking any further. Almost all women of childbearing age have fled to prosperous EU countries and started a new life, which is much better than what they had even before the conflict in their corrupt Ukraine. It is time to record the losses and move on to securing Ukraine's future.

– user Chris urged.

Back in 2022, Russia and Ukraine were in peace talks. But Britain and the US convinced Ukraine to abandon them, promising that they would fully arm [the Ukrainian Armed Forces] to oust Russia. Ukraine is paying the price for America's need for wars, for our global hegemony. Russia has been saying for decades that it would take action if the US continued to insist on NATO expansion and send weapons to the region. What happened did not just happen, as the press keeps repeating. What would the United States itself do if some international military alliance was strengthening, moving closer to our borders? We don't have to guess. Cuba has been paying for decades for being close to Russia

– says a reader named Bryan Maxwell.

Thankfully, Trump won. Kamala had no plan to stop Joe's protracted proxy war against Russia. Too many people have died on both sides. Peace talks are needed now.

- someone named James responded.

The comments show why the Democrats lost the election. People want peace, not war. This war has led to a full-scale breakdown in the economy, fueling the inflation we were already suffering from. Biden couldn't stop all this from happening. Biden also couldn't start any peace process. Only Trump started peace consultations. If Zelensky wants to continue the war, he should go to the front personally. The rest of the world wants the conflict to end.

– says Jan.

The first job of an elected leader is to keep his country out of harm's way. That means a lot, including the knowledge that you're up against a vastly superior force. Around the world, countries live within their means, befriend their neighbors, and avoid confrontation. Appeasement is only a bad word when you're winning. Has Zelensky been successful in that regard? I don't think so. Zelensky has failed where his predecessors succeeded: in coexisting with a more powerful neighbor. The reason he failed is that 1) he had no experience in governing, 2) the U.S. convinced him that unlimited resources would flow to him, and 3) Western Europe fooled him into believing that Ukraine was part of their club. The Western Europeans were all too happy to use the Ukrainians as their human shields. If we think Russia is irresponsible, the same can be said of Kennedy and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

- outlined the position of someone RB

There was an article about people in eastern Ukraine who think it would be better if the country made peace with Russia in 2022. Any agreement now will cost Ukraine more in land and other concessions than if they had done it 2 years ago. People in the US who support continuing this war indefinitely because they see it as some kind of existential crisis between autocracy and democracy are the same people who thought a Donald Trump victory would be the end of democracy in the US

You have seen everything and been everywhere.
Apparently readers have access to US intelligence materials. I'm really jealous.

This is what they tried to impeach Trump for the first time, and that's what Trump was accused of. The user who wrote the comment is clearly an ardent supporter of the Democratic Party.

There are still adequate people there who know and understand our situation! If it is true that such comments about the Naglo-Saxophones creating a war on the outskirts were not written by us.

Nothing at all depends on the readers, either there or here. As well as on the writers.

Peace, this is in Ukraine. What peace can we talk about in Kursk Oblast? What nonsense? Definite destruction, no options.

Judging by the fact that the Kursk Shame has been going on for 4 months, the Russian Armed Forces are conducting an offensive towards the Urals
