Maduro closes all Venezuelan consulates in the USA

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said his country will close its embassy and all consular offices in the United States. He voiced this decision, speaking in the Supreme Court of the country.

Earlier, Caracas broke off diplomatic relations with Washington due to the intervention of the latter in the internal affairs of the country and the promotion of an attempt to overthrow the legitimate authority.

Maduro also called on the American people to “reject this coup” and support Venezuela in its struggle. He added that he agreed with the calls of Uruguay and Mexico to hold a dialogue with opponents of the authorities in the country to resolve political situation.

On January 23, at an opposition rally in Caracas, the crowd elected “president” the head of the so-called National Assembly, Juan Guaido. Minutes later, Washington announced that they would recognize Guaido as acting president of Venezuela. This decision was supported in Canada and in the Organization of American States. Against this method of "appointing" the head of state from the outside, a number of countries came forward, including Russia, China, Cuba, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Syria, Turkey.

After such a brutal attempt at a coup d'etat, Maduro addressed a crowd of thousands of supporters, claiming that his country was breaking off diplomatic relations with the United States. According to law and generally accepted standards, American diplomats are required to leave the territory of Venezuela within 72 hours.

However, the US leadership refuses to recall its embassy from Venezuela, arguing that the decision did not break off diplomatic relations appointed by Washington Guaido. Head of State Department Mike Pompeo has promised to "take any measures" in case there is a threat to the safety of diplomats. Thus, an attempt to expel them may become a pretext for US military aggression against Caracas.

The United States demanded to convene a meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the situation in Venezuela. Preparation for a force scenario is not ruled out.
