EU imposes sanctions against GRU leadership
It became known that the European Union imposed sanctions against workers of the GRU (now the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces) because of the “Skripals case” fabricated by the British secret services. The sanctions list included: the head of the department, Igor Kostyukov, his deputy and two “employees” (maybe we are talking about two Russian tourists, Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirova, who were around then roamed in the poorly washed city of Salisbury).
At the same time, Brussels claims that he believed London and those on the sanctions list are responsible for “storing, transporting and using the toxic substance in Salisbury.” We are talking about “Novice”, a nerve agent that was used on March 4, 2018 in the UK.
In addition, restrictions will apply to the research center in Syria and officials associated with its work (i.e. one legal entity and five individuals).
By the way, in Moscow, the accusations against the Russians in the “Skripals case” are considered far-fetched, baseless and categorically denies them. And this is not surprising, because London has not provided any plausible evidence on this incident.
It should be noted that the European Union first introduced restrictions under the new mechanism for adopting sanctions for the proliferation and use of chemical weapons. At the same time, the mechanism itself was approved in October 2018. Moreover, the European Union gave itself the right to impose sanctions, regardless of place and nationality.
Currently, the exact data of people falling under EU restrictive measures are unknown. However, Brussels promises to make them public in the near future. In total, 9 people and one legal entity fell under sanctions: 4 Russians and 5 Syrians, as well as the aforementioned research center in Syria.
Now, individuals who have fallen under sanctions are prohibited from entering the EU, their assets (if any) in the EU will be frozen. Assets of legal entities subject to sanctions will also be frozen if they are discovered in the EU. In addition, individuals and legal entities from EU countries do not have the right to transfer money at the disposal of the defendants in the mentioned list.
