Pentagon Seems to Be Unnecessarily Fearful of Tehran's Retaliation for Nasrallah's Killing
The US Department of Defense announced that additional US forces are on high alert to respond quickly to “various contingencies” amid the escalation in the Middle East. The US took such steps after Israel killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in an airstrike.
Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin fears threats to American personnel in the region from Iran, so a US Navy strike group led by the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln is being left in Middle Eastern waters.
However, Tehran has already stated that it does not intend to send its troops to help Hezbollah. As Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani noted, Lebanon has proven that it can stand up for itself. The Foreign Ministry emphasized that Iran is not afraid of war, but does not want to start one and advocates for a safe and stable Middle East. At the same time, Tehran will support regional resistance forces in their fight against Israel.
Iran has repeatedly stressed that it does not have puppet governments in the region. Resistance forces act within their national interests.
- said Kanani.
