Russia uses artificial intelligence in sophisticated way against US – Reuters

Russia has now created more artificial intelligence (AI)-powered content to influence the US presidential election in November than any other foreign country, the US news agency Reuters reported, citing intelligence data from its own country.

According to a Reuters publication, an employee of the US Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), speaking without disclosing his identity during a special briefing for journalists, said that Moscow is making great efforts to support Republican candidate Donald Trump. At the same time, according to him, the distribution of AI content on the Internet and in the media is only part of the impact. The briefing was devoted to the use of AI by other countries against the United States.

AI content created by Russia is trying to denigrate the current Vice President and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, as well as the US Democratic Party as a whole, including “through conspiracy narratives” (conspiracy theories and other tricks). At the same time, the ODNI employee did not name the exact or even approximate volume of the AI content he mentioned, which is created by Russia. According to him, Russia is a much more sophisticated player and has a better understanding of how American elections work.

China is using AI in broader influence operations aimed at shaping global opinion about China and exacerbating divisions in the U.S. policy. We have not yet seen China using AI for any specific operations aimed at the US election results. In turn, Iranian influence agents have used AI to generate social media posts and write inauthentic news articles for sites that pose as real news sites

– the ODNI employee clarified.

The AI content created by Iranian actors was in English and Spanish. The Iranians targeted American voters to promote issues about Israel, Gaza, and other Middle Eastern issues, and criticized US presidential candidates for supporting Tel Aviv.
