Gref told why Europe will lag behind in technology

1
The head of Sberbank of Russia and the famous Russian economist German Gref predicted the European Union technological lag. Already in the near future, European countries, which today are considered advanced, may begin to lag behind in the technological sphere. And for this, according to Gref, there are certain reasons.

According to Gref, the main factor behind the lag will be over-regulation of digital technologies and their fields of application. Not so long ago, the European Union adopted the Global Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). And this has led to the fact that advanced developments in the field of artificial intelligence have significantly slowed down.

Gref sees excessive state and legal control as the main reason for technological stagnation:

No need to rush with regulation, no need to regulate what we still do not see and understand, it hits the technology very hard.

The head of Sberbank, having opened up, noted that he is much closer to the American or Chinese models, which are characterized by a lower level of control. He believes that in no case should Russia strive to reproduce the European model:

Where possible, it is necessary not to impose a monopoly state hand on the elements of the development of the digital ecosystem, state and non-state platforms.

Excessive government attention can really ruin the most advanced and productive initiatives. And this, in turn, will adversely affect the overall economic and technological development of the country.
