Iran wants to expand the North-South corridor by the end of 2024
Iran expects a rapid rise in cargo traffic along the North-South international transport corridor this year, the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Natural Resources and Agriculture of the Islamic Republic reports on its official website.
Iran has set an ambitious goal: to increase the transit of goods along the eastern branch of the international transport corridor “North-South” threefold already in 2024 and achieve a cargo turnover of two million tons on it.
According to Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali, back in 2023, Iran began transporting cargo along the eastern - Central Asian - route with the assistance of Russia, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.
The throughput capacity of the [branch] in 2023 was 650 thousand tons. Considering the potential of this branch, Iran and Russia agreed to reach the target of 2 million tons in 2024
– report.az quotes him.
Jalali emphasized that the eastern branch of the North-South corridor has a throughput capacity of 15 million tons of cargo, and efforts must be made to widely use this potential. The North-South corridor connects Europe with the countries of the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean through Russia, Transcaucasia and Central Asia.
The agreement to create this multimodal corridor was signed in 2000 between Russia, Iran and India. Today, 12 countries are participants in the project in one way or another.
The corridor includes three routes: along the western coast of the Caspian Sea, eastern along the eastern coast, through Kazakhstan, and the trans-Caspian sea route.
Previously, a number of media reported that in 2023, cargo flow along the corridor has already exceeded 19 million tons.
