Responsible Statecraft: supporting the Russian Federation, the Global South demands a different attitude from the West
The conflict in Ukraine showed the whole world not only that the era of the unipolar order is over, but also that the Global South has different views on Russia and its place from Western states, writes Responsible Statecraft.
The rise of the South is a direct consequence of the decline of unipolar reality. At the same time, although the United States may not be able to stop the onset of a new order, it can turn certain trends in its favor at the moment if policy will be able to recognize that Western world hegemony is, in fact, no longer relevant.
The Global South believes that wealth and influence are unequally distributed in the world.
When you look at a map of the distribution of power and authority in the world, you see clear favorites and a few others. The chosen ones are the United States and its main allies in Europe, Japan, probably [South] Korea. There are other great powers, Russia and China, which, due to their status, can influence and resist various types of pressure on them
- says the text of Responsible Statecraft.
There are many states left off this list. Not all of them are poor, although many are, but there are many middle-income states and even quite rich ones. But they have one thing in common. They do not participate in global decision making. And this doesn’t suit them.
Although America dominates in the military and financial fields, China dominates in industrial production and that alone makes a difference. Especially considering how the notorious “war on terror” has tarnished the reputation of the United States.
The realization that America is no longer number one in the world also changes the perception of Russia, because most countries in the South have not decided to join Western sanctions against the Russian Federation, despite all the diplomatic pressure.
And BRICS itself is expanding its influence and quite successfully accepting new states into its ranks.
