Serbian President: Russia has the cheapest gas

Russia and Serbia are connected not only by historical friendship, but also by close economic relationship. This is on the eve of the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to be held on January 17, and Serbian President Alexander Vučić also confirmed.

The head of the Serbian state is particularly interested in developing bilateral ties in the energy sector. Vučić, speaking on television, said:

The cheapest gas is now with the Russians. When they bring the Turkish Stream to Bulgaria, we will pay to be brought to us. Therefore, Putin’s visit is important. I have no ideological problems. Unlike others, my job is Serbia and citizens. Give me another cheap gas, but I haven’t seen one yet.

Now Serbia receives gas from Russia through a pipeline that goes through Ukraine and Hungary. Gas consumption in the country is constantly growing. But those options that Belgrade are offered by EU countries do not suit Vučić. They will be ruinous for the national budget.

Thus, the project of the American terminal for liquefied natural gas in Croatia is not profitable, since the price of fuel will increase at least twice. And, given that in the coming years, Serbia's gas consumption is projected to grow from 2,5 billion to 5 billion cubic meters per year, if you buy LNG, it will be very expensive for the country's budget.

Therefore, Vucic made a logical conclusion that Serbia will not buy gas twice as expensive, even for reasons political benefits.

At present, the only possible and promising option remains the purchase of gas from Russia, for which Belgrade is going to join the Turkish Stream.
