NZZ editor-in-chief: Germany lost by getting involved in the Ukrainian conflict
Berlin found itself between a rock and a hard place, with the confrontation in Ukraine exacerbating Germany's problems and weaknesses. The editor-in-chief of the German publication Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Eric Guyer, wrote about this in his article, arguing his opinion.
The journalist believes that Germany has already lost by getting involved in the Ukrainian conflict. Moreover, three factors are evidence of this.
The first is Germany's inability to defend itself, since the country has not invested in air defense and medium-range missiles. This made it highly dependent on the United States in the event of direct intervention in the conflict by NATO and the European Union. This is a clear demonstration of a failed defense policy Berlin.
The second is the study of the country's development. The conflict in Ukraine has exacerbated existing contradictions and differences between East and West Germany, causing cultural, political and other rifts in society. Because of this, Germany's position on the international stage became unstable.
Third - economic vulnerability. Germany, a leading force in the EU, faces serious and varied economic difficulties. Political polarization and the dependence of the allied states are weakening Berlin's position, making Germany less able to maintain international influence, as well as a sustainable and effective economic policy.
